what's the difference between opterons & a64's?

Like for instance, A64 3700+ San Diego is a 2.2GHz 90nm s939 w/ 128kb L1, 1mb L2. The Opteron 148 is the exact same thing for $40 more...

yep. If your not overclocking dont buy the opteron. If you are then you may want to look into the 144 or the 146. Guess I should edit my post and include single core.

Does this mean that if you ARE overclocking, you definitely should buy the Opteron? Is it worth the increase in price?

If you are overclocking then you should at least consider the opteron. I'd pay a few pounds more to get an opteron (i did, but then i got shafted by the bloody company selling them 😡), in the end i got a 4400X2 which tops out at 2.54Ghz on 1.45V. It's fast as hell compared to my old Barton 2500, but i suspect that i'd get better clocks with my first choice opteron 170.

I've had two. The first one (CAB2E 0546 FPAW) could barely do 2.3 with stock volts and only 2.4 stable thereafter. The second one (CAB2E 0604 DPAW) is doing 2.79 on stock.

Luck of the draw, definitely, but if you manage to get a good one then it's definitely worth it 😉

I've had two. The first one (CAB2E 0546 FPMW) could barely do 2.3 with stock volts and only 2.4 stable thereafter. The second one (CAB2E 0604 DPAW) is doing 2.79 on stock.

Luck of the draw, definitely, but if you manage to get a good one then it's definitely worth it 😉

Sorry, I am new to this. Can you tell me which Opteron model you got and what the stock speeds were so I can get an idea of how much o/c you achieves? I am not sure I know what CAB2E 0546 FPMW means.

Edit: I see. You are talking about the Opteron 148!

Oops, forgot to mention which CPU it was. Silly me 😕

Both cpus were Opteron 146s. Forgot I don't have a sig in this forum

[edit] CAB2E 0546 FPAW refers to the stepping and week of production. It's only a general guide as to how well a particular processor overclocks (based on user trial/error)
