some players/recorders supports both, and some only supports one... they are basically the same right?

I dunno really, but I buy DVD+R because I can rewrite the media code or whatever it's called to make the disc appear to players as a DVD-ROM disc. I wouldn't pay more for that ability, though - and only some writers can do this.

-r,+r are just format
-r are superior, imho. +r always cost more and are only more compatible by 1 percent! :D when used with a newer dvd burner, called booktype setting altering from dvd+r to dvd-rom
but since most -r are mass produced, it is far cheaper and are used by the majority! I use -r exclusively because I can get them wholesale price and are more compatible by at least 10 percent since most people still use old burner that aren't capable of changing booktype for +r!

oddly enough, i have the almost the exact opposite opinion on this issue. -r is slightly more compatible with dvd players, but +r is cheaper (plus about every burner on the planet seems to burn +r faster than -r)

i only use +rs because my burner burnes them at 8x and only burns -rs at 4x, ive never made a DVD with anything other then data on it and i have no idea WTF booktypeing is

 for any of them, -R or +R, as long as they are Made in Japan (MIJ)

Anubis: what burner? previously my 3520A only did 4x on TYG01 (4x rated -R), but i h4x0r3d the firmware so now it does 8x or 12x (i stuck w/ 8x because it had slightly better PI/PIO scans)

Plextor 708a

and haveing it go faster is really a non issue, takes 8 min at 8x, which is fine, all i do is burn data to DVDs and put them in a binder

well, silly folks: when you go to newegg to purchase DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs, you usually go to the Media section of the site, not the Hardware section of the site ;)

-R's are more compatible in my experience, but now a days it doesn't matter what kind you get because most burners are dual format anyways.

but as someone else said, its just a format. you burner can only either burn -R, +R, or it can do both. However, your drive can read either format. it's only about what your burner can actually burn where the media matters, and like I stated, most drives now a days can burn both anyways.

but IMO, -R's are better, and I've burnt well over 1500 dvdr discs. +R just seem to have more problems than -R's, or it could be that the +R's I had used were Memorex brand given to me by a friend, whereas I usually bought Ritek -R's.

Ritek > * for dvd media.

No other format can match DVD+R/+RW's functionality, simplicity and compatibility. DVD+R/+RW was designed from the beginning with both data and video recording uses in mind. Compatibility with existing DVD players and DVD-ROM drives is a major strength of the DVD+R/+RW format. Because there are no confusing recording modes, you don't have make trade-offs between compatibility and flexibility.

DVD+RW video recorders allow users to add, delete or divide titles, overwrite titles in whole or in part, create or modify play lists and make other changes without losing compatibility with existing DVD players, unlike other formats. DVD+R/+RW also allows instant use and instant eject - you don't have to wait for the disc to format or finalize. And DVD+R/+RW recorders offer the same type of operation you're used to seeing on DVD players.

For PC users, DVD+RW offers direct editing on disc, background formatting so you don't have to wait before you can use the disc, built-in defect management, multi-session writing, and other unique recording features. DVD+R/+RW uses the same disc for both video and data. You can share recordings between your home electronics and computer equipment, add new recordings or even edit directly on the same disc. Furthermore, DVD+R Double Layer technology allows for storage of up to 8.5 GB of data on a single sided disc.

I have a 1998 DVD player and the plus format plays fine on it.

For some reason most of the +R discs burned in a Pioneer 16x DL & now my NEC ND-3520A wouldn't play in any of the DVD players of friends & family (mostly older players). -R plays like a champ, all the time. I use -R for video, +R for data (just 'cuz I have a bunch of +R).

the default booktype for +r is +r lmao, you need to set it to dvd-rom manually by use of hacked firmware. it's such a pain in the ass, that's why -r is still better in the compatibility department. most are too clueless about booktype setting or hacked firmware!

I get 200 for 32.40, try to beat that! 500 for 76.50. I'm no causual user either, most complain about their hd lacking space because backing up is a pain or they can't get it wholesale price. oh well, their problems.
don't make me laugh! a while back, I got 1000 for 130.00 shipped in 4 days. This blows away your so called +r deal. :D:D:D
