What's the difference between ATX and ATX12V?

The title says it all. Simply, how do the two standards differ?

They seem to be different specs. All the PSUs on NewEgg have either ATX or ATX12V.

short version:

12v capacity (ATX 12v) became more important than 5v (ATX) as more stuff runs off the 12v rail (regulators, PCI-e etc) now. many, but not all, ATX 12v PSUs have dual 12v rails.

ATX 12v have the 24 pin connector, ATX has the 20.

ATX12V will have the extra 4pin square 12V molex connector that plugs into the motherboard. It is literally, an ATX supply with the standard 20pin connector, plus the extra 12V connector.

The 24pin connector came later, and it is called something else. ATX2 maybe?

I think youre right, ATX 12v has the 20 plus the 4 pin 12v connector, ATX 12v ver 2 has the 24 pin and no separate 4 pin 12v connector, looks like they just moved it to the main connector.

The regular plain ATX is just the 20 pin with no 4 pin 12v connector then.

They get use interchangeably a lot Im sure.
