What's the difference between a sports jacket and a vest?

no, i'm talking about a sports jacket (looks like a vest but can be worn to casual events...bars, parties,etc) and a vest/suit (stuff you wear w/ a tie). they look identical to me. so i was wondering what makes them look different from each other.
 
well ozma, i just got somethign from banana that has all of your qualification of a suit coat, yet it was sold alone w/out pants. so did i just buy a sport jacket or a suit coat?
