What's the difference between a "non-booted" and a "booted" cat5 cable?

the nice patch cables don't need a boot.

The plug itself has a small cover that prevents snagging of the plug without the added bulk of a boot.

In many switches the boot can be problematic because it is very difficult to squeeze 48 plugs right next to each other.
 
I hate boots. It's hard to disconnect them from the back of computers when they are in there amongst other plugs. Any time I get a cable with a boot like the one linked above, I rip off the part that covers the plastic piece you need to push down.
