What's the difference between a "non-booted" and a "booted" cat5 cable?

Look at logo at this page:www.ezaln.net

The Red CAT5 connected to clear RJ-45, and inserted into a jack. You can see the cable goes into the plug since it is Not Booted.

Now look here: http://www.cyberguys.com/templ...detail.asp?T1=119+5143

When Inserting the Cable the Boot adds protection to the Integrity of the cable and the plug.

After insertion it covers the area and keeps it clean.

the nice patch cables don't need a boot.

The plug itself has a small cover that prevents snagging of the plug without the added bulk of a boot.

In many switches the boot can be problematic because it is very difficult to squeeze 48 plugs right next to each other.

I hate boots. It's hard to disconnect them from the back of computers when they are in there amongst other plugs. Any time I get a cable with a boot like the one linked above, I rip off the part that covers the plastic piece you need to push down.
