I just built my Quad a couple of weeks ago, and used an Evga 8800GT. Part number N-802 which according to their website, is clocked faster than their N-801 card which is also 512MB. No complaints about my choices so far, this machine rocks!

But I was just looking at the OffTopic section of my other favorite, the CorvetteForum.com

Theres a guy on the Forum that says he just bought an 8800GT too - but his is 256MB and only clocked at 600MHz. This card is clocked at 650 outta the box.

Why all these different flavors of the 8800GT? I know there's also the GTS series, which is clocked faster.

So is my card, the middle of the road version of this GeForce 8800GT?

you have the high end range of the 8 series. there is also the 8400, 8500, 8600, as well as the 8800. then there are specific models of each.

low to high range starting from low.

8400GS
8500GT
8600GT
8600GTS
8800GS - you can only find a few reference cards so technically this is an option
8800GT
8800GTS
8800GTX
8800 Ultra

Thanks for that.

But that contradicts my Evga card being clocked at 650 out of the box ...

Nvidia produces so-called reference specifications. These are the baseline specs for a card of a given model, like the 8800GT. The 8800GT's "reference" core clock speed is 600MHz. Yours is a factory overclocked version with a core clock speed of 650MHz. This is a fairly common practice, and overclocked versions are also available from XFX, BFG Tech, and other companies.

8800GT outperforms the 8800GTS 320mb and 640mb versions, but not the 512mb version, btw.
