What's the diff b/t a T1 and SDSL?

MichaelD

Lifer
AFAIK, a T1 line is 1.5mb/s up and down. So is SDSL (synchronus DSL).

I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my home DSL service...I want faster upload than 15kb/s

Just asking. Thanks. 🙂

You tend to get more guarantees on a T1, on both uptime as well as actual ul/dl speed. 1.5Mbps maximum is great, but if you don't get past 3Kbps you might think less positive about it.

T1s are about $800-900 a month + teleco loop which is about $400 a month. So $1300 a month. So about $15000 a year for a full T1. SDSL is $400-500 a month for 1.5mb. The difference is with a T1 you are guaranted 99% uptime.

As Skyclad said, most T1 providers give an SLA (Service Level Agreement) that guarantees both uptime and bandwidth.
For example if my T1 goes down I get a credit for 1 day of service for every hour that it is down. This is something that you most likely will not get
with DSL but for home use where guaranteed uptime isn't really critical your likely to save quite a bit of money with DSL.

Just like real estate, depends greatly on the area. I pay $599 a month for a full service T1 w/ 8 public IP addy's. Install cost was $150.

What a lot of people don't think about is the ass expensive equipment you need to run a T1 line. A bare bottom Cisco Router w/ CSU/DSU card will run about $1500, and a respectable hardware firewall will run another $1000.

You can go cheaper if you hit ebay for some used gear.

[EDIT] Look into fractional T1 prices.

Holy crap, I'm sure you really didn't intend to make me spit my coffee all over my monitor, but hey, that's OK. 😀

Weeelllllll then, no T1 for me, that's for sure! :Q Sheeeeeeeesh.

I'll be giving SWBell a call then. I know they have "business class" DSL which I believe is 1.5mb/s down and 384kb/s up. I think it's $150 a month, which doesn't sound so bad when compared with that info above *wipes sweat from brow*

I think, though, you have to use one of their routers and pay a for a tech ($200) to "install" it at your house though...that ticks me off since I have yet to find one phone/cable installer that knows more than I do. <--not saying too much there, either.

Oh, I don't get cable internet b/c cable sucks. My GF has Roadrunner. She gets 350kb/s downloads 🙂Q) during off peak and at 8:00PM and day of the week gets about 20kb/s down.

that's why I stay away from cable. It's $10/mo cheaper than my DSL, but I DL a lot of stuff...can't be messing with those ISDN speeds.

Dnetmhz, your T1 has GOT to be a business write-off, correct? Not being nosy...well, hell yeah! I'm being nosy. 😀

Thanks for the info, gents.

"Fractional T1?" Is that what it sounds like it is? What kind of speeds could I expect from that? I wouldn't want to share a 1.5mb/s DL/UL with 12 other people!

Unless you got a lot of spare cash or a business this makes no sense for you Micheal.

Try Earthlink/Mindspring 1.5/384 ADSL via "Covad" if it's available in your area. It's 50 bucks a month using dynamic IP and I think 60 for a static IP.

Covad did go bankrupt last year but they are still in business and are slowing getting there act together again,at least it seems so for now.

I been on that 1.5/384 package for a while and so far had very little downtime and pretty consistent speeds. Check out DSL Reports also for more information. Good luck.

if I am right, that is a T1 line with multiple users. From what I heard you are better off just getting cable or DSL.

hmmm.. i use bellsouth fastaccess DSL.. advertised 1500/256 for 45$/month.... i usually actually get ~1200/220... also hardly any down time.. we've had em for about a year and a half now.... you may wanna look into them if theyr'e in your area...

Hey, how about this?

Covad DSL 1.5down/384 up $90 a month. Cheaper than SWBell, but didn't Covad go bankrupt last year?

MichaelD,

Covad did bankrupt last summer but it was negotiated and all their debt was wiped out and they expect to be break even by the end of this year. I have a Covad line and the system is top notch. If you want the 1.5/384 package though I recommend you go with Speakeasy.net, covad.net doesn't give static IP addresses and neither does earthlink (another reseller).

Speakeasy is my provider and I like them.

Yeah that's sounds better since you get a static ip.

Thanks Gentlemen. I appreciate your time and all the info. 🙂

I've never heard of Speakeasy.net, but I'll check them out, Rahvin. Bandwith, bandwith, bandwith; I need more bandwith! 😀 <---doesn't everyone?

I get used to being at work....5mb/s up AND down. 😀 You get spoiled, you know?

Covad does sell 1.5 SDSL packages, I think they run $399 a month. SDSL is the sh!t if you can afford it, ping times to the POP are less than 10ms. One thing about speakeasy.net, they don't care if you run servers.

PS if you sign up with them I would appreciate the referal. 🙂

Speakeasy is my provider as well; I have a static ip, and I'm paying $159/mo for 768kbps sDSL (although I may upgrade to 1.1Mbit sDSL for $199/mo). The major advantage in addition to the static ip (and NO PPPoE) is the Terms of Service which explicitly allow you to run a server. They will not mess with you, and the uptime is excellent, as is the reliability.

OK, well I'm screwed. I checked out Speakeasy...they say I'm too far away from the CO for anything but IDSL. I know that's not true, as I have ADSL (1.5down/128up) thru SWBell now.

So, I called SWBell to see what they could offer in terms of upgrade. I actually got an intelligent human being on the phone *shock!:Q*.

He told me that I'm just over 22K feet away from the CO and on a separate branch as it is. The only thing I can get is what I have now. But, for another $15/mo, I get 5 static IPs.

I may go with that...I dunno....I'm sad right now. 🙁

Static IPs are nice, but what's the point if I can't have a decent upload speed? I like the idea of hosting from home....the guy on the phone did mention that for $20/mo, SWBell would host me.

I'd imagine their upload speed is blazing. What do you guys think?
