What's the delay time from being infected with HIV and having a positive test?

I took my cat to the vet last Thursday. My cat is always a little psycho, but she goes totally nuts at the vets office. When the vet went to take the thermometer out of my cats butt, my cat freaked out and I'm pretty sure she clawed the assistant that was holding my cat down. The cat jumped on the floor and I picked her up. In the process of getting the cat back on the table, I got some nice cuts.

I'm really not that worried about getting HIV from the assistant. I'm not even sure that she was scratched.

Anyway, my question is how long would it take for the HIV virus to show up in a test?

EDIT: I don't know anything about the assistant. From the looks of her, I would guess that there is nothing wrong with her.

It can take up to 6 months before it's detected. If you're really concerned, you should ask the assistant if she's HIV positive.

I'm really not that concerned. I was just watching some "wildest police videos" show on TV and a cop got stuck with a needle. On the show, they said he had to wait two days to find out that he was ok. Two days seemed a little short to me, so I thought I would ask here.

Good luck to you and your cat.

EDIT: you weren't taking in the cat to get it checked for HIV or CIV... FIV?, were you?

I was taking the cat to the vet because she hadn't been able to keep any food down for 2 days. The vet couldn't tell me why the cat was sick, but she was doing fine within 6 hours of going to the vet.

Dude, less than 1% of the general population is infected with HIV.

Also, even if exposed to infected blood on a fresh cut, it is unlikely to have it transmitted. You bleed out for a reason, you know.

Chill out.

This has to be a parody thread...

Seriously, if you're that worried about it, call the vet's office and talk to her about it. Just tell her that you're going to get tests run on you, and would like to know if there are any hazards that you'll need to give the doctor when you see them.

Make sure to mention that you think she has HIV, I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

I'm really not worried about it, but you have to see that there is a very slight chance that someone could get HIV like this.
