I have the Sony DSC 85. i think it's a great camera. i'd get the 75 if i were to do it all over again. max resolution is the only difference between the 2 and i rarely shoot at the max resolution for the dsc85.

yeah they do use a canon lens
From Dpreview.com
The G2 features the same extending 3x, F2.0 - F2.5 'Canon Zoom Lens' (which I'm assured is made by Canon) as we saw on the G1 and the ring surrounding the lens can be removed to take the optional lens thread adapter, required to add optional wide angle, telephoto or macro lenses.

<-- owner of a d1 (at least for now, untill someone buys it from me). Great cameras, very feature rich, especially for the price, but definitely not the best.

IMHO, battery life, memory card size, simplicity, and weight is the determine factor.

It reminded me of the time I went to Banff National Park (Canada, AB/BC) with my gf that came from Barbados. I stop the car too look at a dozen black/brown bears along the grass on the side of the highways. She was so excited, got out of the car with her point & shoot, and ran toward the cute & cuddly man-eaters because it was her first time seeing wild animals. I had to chase after her to get her back into the car as she was about 25-30 yards way from the closes bear. After we are back in the car I promptly pull out my SLR with a 300mm and let her wind through 1 1/2 roll of film (it was too bad that I didn?t have my 500mm at that moment). Uses the right tool for the job. For most people it is not often that they do 8x10 prints, and if they ever does a 2 megapixels is more than adequate for that, The next size up is 11x14 print that required 4 megapixles which not many home printer can accommodate. I tend to carry around an Olympus Stylus 35mm point & shoot and an elcheapo digital for quick snapshot. I will go back to the location with my 35mm SLR or medium format camera if there is a scene/situation that I feel it worth while for large print/s.

whoa, didnt she knows that those bears are actually alive? hihi .. good thing nothing bad happened though and i'm pretty sure both of you had a wonderful time there.

Anyway .. to richardycc , i love my S230. IMO, it's the best compact 3.2MP camera you can find out there right now, you can record up to 3 minutes of videa even though that's not really a major advantage. It's small enough to fit in the pocket and will do the job when you need to take snapshots of daily events. Get it!

I'm pretty sure the G1 used Carl Zeis...I know there was some other non-Sony camera that did, and I'm pretty sure it came from the Cannon end of the display. Dunno, I could be wrong.

I think it was epson. They mirrored the Sony cameras (I THINK).

lets stay away from the $700 cameras...i would get her a sony f707 if i could..but i dont have that kind of cash....up to $300-350

For the price range you speak of, I' go with an Olympus with the features you prefer. Atleast 3X optical zoom.

That's all.www.opinion.com is a great place to learn about digital cameras. maybe it was e-pinoion. DAmn it, now I forget.

Maybe, but Circuit City doesn't carry them, I know it is one they have...Sony, Canon, Fuji, HP(uses pentax in their good ones), Nikon, Kodak...
