what's the deal with used athlon 3200+ barton prices

I've got a machine I put together back in Feb-2004. It's got a socket A athlon 3200+ barton processor that I paid $200 for at the time.

The computer died off recently and I suspect its the processor so I was out on ebay looking for a replacement part.

Damn, there almost as expensive used now. Man of them going from $150-$200.

Is there something great about this guy that I don't know about? Just a lot of people upgrading old socket A machines? What gives? I would have thought that these would be cheap by now given that its three years later.

They haven't been made in years, and were scarce back then (much lower supplies / fewer sold than slower models). Now the only people buying them instead of getting a new AM2 or Core 2 apparently need them badly.

Just get some slower model from the FS/FT forums here for $20 instead.

They've got a lot of Barton 2500+ which will easily oc to 3200+ by just running it at 200MHZ FSB for probably less than $30.00 at the For Sale/Trade forum. I wouldn't pay more than $50.00 for a 3200+ Athlon XP CPU!

Had a similar thing happen years ago. I bought a p3 800mhz slot 1 cpu new for $185 and used it for three years then sold it on ebay for $165. 😀

Agreed on the 2500+ Barton if you can find one. I've yet to run across a 2500+ Barton that haven't o/c'd to 3200+ speeds with ease. My 2500+ Barton has been running a 11@200 for over 4 years now. It's take a quite a beating as it's my son's PC.

On that note, a 2600+ Sempron is not bad either. These are usually cheap when you can find them and o/c at 11@200 (and beyond) just as easily. I have one in my daughter's PC.

Both processors already come set at 11x by the factory so the only thing you need to do is adjust the FSB from 333mhz to 400mhz.

Its all about supply and demand. I am looking to upgrade my S939 AMD X2 3800+ but cant even find a 4800+ anywhere. My have to OC the crap out of it or try and find one used and pay an arm and a leg.

I am so glad I picked up a 4800+ when I had to chance to get one cheap. You're right. I'm very surprised they are so hard to come by these days.

I was looking at X2 3800+ @939s a month or so back, and they are about double the price they were before C2S came out. Same goes for virtually all S939 CPUs, think it's just the phasing out causing supply to dwindle. No way I can upgrade from my A64 3200+ Winchester (I think) at a sane price, but I didn't plan on it anyways.

I have one of those running in my spare PC ATM. 🙂 I ran it at 11x200 right out of the box...man...like 4 years ago I think! It's got a SLK900/92mm fan on it and it's been purring along without a glitch since then. I've run W2K, WinXP, W2K3, Suse 9.0 on that box. *sigh* what a great processor!

3200+ barton's are expensive because it's officially the highest speed CPU you can stick in the socket.

Realisticly, all the 2500+ mobiles will Overclock to the speed of the 3200+ or higher ... however, most people don't overclock.

EDIT: for the record, I still run a mobile 2500+ in my HTPC, I have it actually underclocked a bit (to get better heat levels with a lower RPM CPU fan)

I gave my other mobile 2500+ (oc'd to 3200) to my cousin a few months ago. Both machines still run strong.

In one of the systems I have here I am running the golden barton 2500+, it is a 3200+ in disguise 😀 Set the FSB to 200MHz instead of the default 166MHz and voila! Got myself a 3200+, rock solid. The magic stepping is AQXEA for the 2500's.
