I always hear good things about IBM laptops and they were the first ones to emerge in the area but I dont think they are anything special. The only things that they have is the fingerprint reader and full-size keyboard, kinda nifty. ThinkPads remind me of MACs; nothing special but expensive as hell!

IBM ThinkPad R52
? 1.73-GHz Pentium M 740 processor
? 14.1-inch screen
? 7.0 pounds
? 40GB hard drive
? DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive
? Price when ranked: $1749

compared to a Compaq Presario V2000:

? 1.8-GHz Pentium M 745 processor
? 14.1-inch wide screen
? 7.0 pounds
? 80GB hard drive
? DVD-RW drive
? Price when ranked: $1298

Thinkpads (at least the T series) tend to be built better and so can take more punishment then other laptops.

you also have to think about build quality and customer service quality. i don't believe that compaq can get anywhere near topping either of those qualities from IBM/Lenovo

Built better, and a good keyboard is a big deal on a laptop, where most of them are mediocre and some are bad enough to hinder typing.

I agree on the keyboard and support. But realisticly would you pay the premium of the IBM for better service, and lets say that you are computer savvy and wont call customer support asking how to get into safemode.

Less crappy ACPI.

I like the keyboards.

Better supported under my OS of choice.

I just wish they'd use better wireless cards.

I know they have good service because one of my roommates had to send his back like 3 times to get it fixed. My sister had to send hers back once too, both T42Ps.
