Whats the deal with Southern College Football Coaches having State Trooper escorts

Ive never understood the reason why southern football college coaches need a couple of state troopers as body guards while on the field. This seems to be a southern tradition that the big schools carry on and I don't understand why.

why state troopers? why not the campus police? hell why even have them at all? Are the southern schools prone to attacking the coach or something?
