What's the deal with signing your name at the end of posts?

I see a few people doing this. Your user name is on the left, so why is it necessary to sign your name at the bottom of your post too?

Another thing is with email. You know who it's from, it's in the 'From' field in the email. So then why do you need to sign it?

When I watch NBC Nightly News, I wonder why Tom Brokaw always says "I'm Tom Brokaw." NOOO, you're Santa Claus.

It's a custom that has been ingrained in us over the years of letter writing, so it's a hard habit to break. Besides, it's curteous to sign your own work. I still sign most of my personal emails, even though the person obviously knows who it's coming from.

Because I would rather be associated with the nickname "Armani" rather then the one on the left. I have had that name for years, and am not about to change it now, but too many people have gotten realy pissed and flamed me.

I wonder if any of you mega-posters (Russ, Viper GTS, FFMCobalt) have ever forgotten to sign your post. I mean with 10,000+ you'd think there'd be room for error. :)

I agree with Viper, it's force of habit on the forums, though I did start signing "ZV" instead of Zenmervolt because when people replied they almost invariably called me either "Zimmervolt" or "Zimmerman" and I figured that it'd be easier for them if I just started using "ZV". As for E-mail, E-mail is a regular letter, just transmitted differently. Therefore it follows logically that it should be formatted as letters are. With very few exceptions, the E-mail I send follows the modified block letter format.

ZV
