whats the deal with pork?

I think some people here were on the right track with Trichinosis...

unlike a lot of meats, the more important thing when cooking pork is that it must reach a certain tempature to be safe to eat...and the results of under cooking are a lot worse then other meats.

Pork is prohibited not because they wallow in their own waste, but because in ancient times they wallowed in *human* waste. If you ever look at those archeological digs they do at ancient cities in the middle east, they weren't very clean. Peoples idea of taking out the trash then was to simply dump it out the window in to the street. This is partly why Tels formed. Centuries worth of garbage and trash built up over the years and slowly raised the level of the city. Sites occupied for >2000 years had a lot of garbage pile up.

Because pigs rooted through human waste it was much more likely that meat from pigs was infected with some paracite that affected humans. This is that same reason why one *never* fertilizes a field with human waste. So what if the crops we grow or the meat we eat is infected with a cyst that afftects cows. Our immune system can handle it. But it was much more likely that pigs were infected with something that was harmful to humans.

Anyway, over the course of a few centuries people noticed that people got sick when eating pork, so they prohibited it for religious reasons. Even though conditions aren't the same today this has still carried over. Their loss. Modern pork is no longer unclean because we don't let the animals roam around in an unclean environment.

It was a very good idea for early societies to adopt cleanliness rituals, including those of diet... Bad pork will kill you.

Pork = Puffer Fish? 😛

Those who don't eat pork OVERWHELMINGLY won't eat shrimp either - or shark - because they're bottom-feeders. They're scavengers and they eat dead things. If they killed their meals, that would be better. They'd be freshly dead. Scavengers are lowest on the food chain, so religions usually say they are above those animals.

Sharks aren't scavengers...

Duh, yea they are.

One shark scavenged my friend's arm while he was surfing.

He is wrong and you are right, sharks, except for the whalesharks who are whales are all scavengers.
WTF????

Sharks are active predators, by and large. Some are scavengers and all will gladly join in on a kill.

Whale sharks are not whales, idiot. Whales are mammals and whale sharks are fish. Basking sharks, whale sharks and megamouth sharks are filtre feeders: they eat krill.

Under cooking foul (esp chicken) is bad too. Salmonella is just as unpleasant as trichinosis.

Oh well, more ribs/pork/bacon/etc for me~!
That's precisely my sentiment. Ham, bacon, sausage, roast, chops, steaks. More for me! 😀

Sharks aren't scavengers...

They're opportunistic feeders. They're as likely to scavenge as they are to hunt. That's one function of detecting blood in water from a long distance.

its delicious... religion's job is to stop you from doing the things you like... sex.. drugs... rock and roll... pork... its all there....

Whalesharks are sharks. They're cold blooded, cartilagenous elasmobrancs with gills like all the others.

Pork is tasty. Mmmmmm....

Especially Ribs, chops, roasts, Bacon, and Sausage.

I don't care too much for ham, though it's good on a sandwich...

i think i could give up pork entirely if it wasnt for bacon and proscuitto.....

proscuitto is uncooked pig.....its cured....and oh so good.

and if it wasnt for tbone steaks i could give up red meat altogether.

This thread reminds me of the time i went into a jewish deli in NYC and ordered
a bacon and egg sandwhich.LOL,i was half asleep in the morning and after asking for
it 2 times and getting a confused look from the deli guy i finally remembered and apologized.

More for me....

If God had not wanted us to eat pigs he would not have made them out of bacon, sausage and pork rinds.
