I thought this was stereotype but the more I think about it, the more I tend to believe it.

Nerds spend the vast majority of their time inside. Therefore they have minimal exposure to outside pollen and such. Once exposed they get allergy attacks.

I thought it was genetic? Not that their... pollen tolerance (?) was going down by staying inside? Now that I think of it, though, all the people I know with allergies spend most of their time inside. It could be that because of their allergies, they spend most of their time inside, not vice versa.

Logically, people with allergy problems would avoid being outdoors. I'm not sure if it's the other way around, my impression was that the allergens bother you and it's not something you can build an immunity against. I could be wrong though, not a doctor obviously.

From my immunology class:

It's both generic and environment. The environmental component depends on the way you were raised as a child. If your mother was tidy and kept a spotlessly clean house you were more prone to having allergies. If you lived on a farm or had a dog growing up, you were less prone to having allergies.

I think it's because of how your immune system is developing and recognizes more things as being "harmless" rather than being a potential parasite which is the reason for our allergic response.

There are treatments for allergies involving allergy shots which basically is developing a specific type of antibodies(IgG) to blanket the allergens before the another type of antibody (IgE) gets the opportunity to realease histamine.

Well shit. I didn't have allergies until I went away to college and came back. It was completely environmental for me.

But in an effort to not be a mutant, I don't complain about them, and if they're bad, I'll take something ending in a -D to get rid of the symptoms.
