I am sitting here and doing my work and then the upper level managers are all using their speaker phones at their loudest volume and then they start yelling over it and then slam the door. I just dont get it! just pick up the receiver and speak into it!

Because they're busy and important and don't have time to deal with petty things like picking up receivers, you lowly peon!!!

a headset/speaker is alot more comfortable than the stupid receiver.

It took a few months, but no one within 30 yards of me uses a speakerphone any more. I just kept telling them it was disturbing the programmers in my area, and either pick up the phone or go to a conference room.

you have both hands to do stuff with. and not have one occupied by the telephone.

i will use a speakerphone even if somebody asks me to pick up the phone to have a private conversation. i'd rather get up and close my office door for privacy than pick up the reciever.

It's one of those things you do "because you can" to indirectly help the peons know their place.

I'm not a manager...or even close... and I used to use my speaker phone all the time for meetings etc.... Although it didn't seem to bother anyone. (I was careful to not have it to loud etc.)

We got new phones a while back, and I now have a headset

For me it was a comfort/convience thing. For long meetings it was just more comfortable, plus it was hands free so I could keep working while listening to the meeting.

I did use the handset for quick calls though.

I guess thats ok if you are on a long conference call, but if its even a quick conversation, he still uses it really loud and keeps yelling can you hear me?

Ha Ha!

We just moved into our new building over last weekend. My boss, who previously had an office, now has a cube (only FVPs and above get "villas"). It's a very open floorplan with low cubewalls so everyone can get a view out the windows at Puget Sound. He used to use his speakerphone all the time, and he was quite pissed when he found out that the speaker function on our spanking new IP phones were disabled.

BTW, I have a window seat, he doesn't.
