What's the deal with joomla?

The learning curve on Joomla is higher than it is on basic HTML. Learn just the rudiments of HTML and you'll be able to do things faster and more efficiently than you would with any CMS.

Wow.

So you think someone with rudimentary HTML knowledge will be able to more easily create a database driven website including user account management, theming, blogging, and the hundreds of other things that there are already freely available extensions to do on your website? OP, don't listen to GagHalfrunt, he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

As for Joomla, it's a decent CMS depending on what you want out of it. I built a site for my wife's business in Joomla in a few days including image galleries and a rotating front page billboard, blogging, testimonials page, etc. We looked around, found a template she liked, installed Joomla, installed the template, added a couple of other custom controls the site, and that was it. Joomla is great to get a site up and running quickly, but it's got a very rigid structure compared to a CMS like Drupal which is extremely flexible and powerful, but has a much higher learning curve than Joomla.

I hope that what GagHalfrunt meant is that understanding the basics of HTML will help... which it will. It certainly won't be easier to do what Joomla does in HTML ... rofl.

ROFL!! Typical kiddie response of losers who don't really know how to do anything without the crutch of a CMS. Did OP ask about databases, account management or theming? He sounds like he wants to do a basic site and in that case Joomla is a ridiculous choice. HTML is so easy to learn. For that matter so are databases. You can always tell a person that knows jackshit about anything web-related because they'll be the ones most vocally suggesting the wonder of Joomla. Anyone with a website IQ over 2 and the ability to write a single tag by hand laughs at how buggy Joomla is, how it makes simple tasks insanely convoluted, how every Joomla theme looks like every other Joomla theme and how after wrestling to learn something so stupendously counter-intuitive you STILL don't know anything about building a web site.

Not sure how to feel about this.

I agree that html is relatively easy to learn and is a great way to do a simple website, even for a new designer...

But to say that learning DB design and implementation is easy is just... well... wrong. Or at least to do it anything close to "right".

The workings of an internal combustion engine are pretty easy to learn too. That doesn't mean that you should build your next engine yourself... Especially when there are tons of trained qualified companies and people that already do it...

Angry much?

Doing a 'basic' website with HTML will be easy for a beginner.

Making a website on the same level of design as even a simple Joomla themed CMS site is not something a 'beginner' could swallow.

Understanding HTML and CSS is one thing, being able to pull it all together is another.

I think people reading this thread will be able to tell which is the immature response here, but just for the record: keep your posts polite or go find some other place to play.

WordPress is the most user friendly, Drupal is the most developer friendly and Joomla lays somewhere in between the two.

If it's just a few simple pages and a theme then WordPress is your best bet.

I'm sure your Geocities sites were wonderful, but the rest of the world has grown up.

Ugh, Joomla.

I had (have, don't maintain) a site that runs on Joomla and it's a PITA. Seriously, it's a total pain to do the simplest of things like put up a simple news article with a picture or two.

It does have some nice features but not enough to overcome it's higher learning curve, unless you need a really robust CMS.

Modifying any CMS's looks are in the basic coding and CSS.

I think you're doing something wrong. Reference my post above, it took me a couple days to set up my wife's site and she was comfortably updating it after a couple more days.
