I'm not a hardcore fan of baseball, but I follow it a bit. There was a big deal about Ricky Henderson stealing second in last MOnday's game, but I couldn't figure it out. I heard something about unwritten rules.

Can anyone shed some light?

Searched, but couldn't find any posts on this.

It's cuz the Padres had such a big league so late in the game. The game is about winning ball games for the team, not records or whatever. It's kinda like football where the team on offense has the lead and just downs the ball to run out the clock, rather than try for another touchdown.

It may be some unwritten rule, but obviously records are more important for him... but it's not like he wouldn't have any other chances at stealing, right?

(Excuse my vagueness but I don't follow college sports at all)
There was some female college basketball player who broke her leg or something right before the final game of the season, but she was on the verge of tying or breaking some school record. So in the final game, the two playing teams came to some agreement where the injured girl would be allowed an unchallenged layup (she stood underneath the basket, her team tipped the ball and passed it to her) so she beat the record. The opposing team was then allowed to even up the game unchallenged. Then she was taken out. All for what? A record.
