What's the deal with GMRS licenses?

Does everybody actually get them? I see so many motorola GMRS/FRS 2-way radios for sale all over the web, and I can't imagine that everybody would shell out the money to actually get the FCC license.

Its a radio service that transmits at higher powers... you know those motorola talkabouts? Well, the ones that use GMRS say they have a 5 mile range as opposed to the FRS ones that say they have a 2 mile range.

Anyways, you need a license for the GMRS ones and I was wondering if people actually buy them.

Well, they're not exactly hard to get. I know a basic HAM radio license is pretty simple. Something like knowing the laws and being able to interprit Morse Code at 5 words a minute or something
