What's the deal with flowers?

Once again, I've given my wife flowers for a special ocassion -- it's her birthday tomorrow. She told me that (naturally) she was estatic and started to cry when they arrived at the door this morning. Saltboy shoots. He scores! Yay! 🙂

But that got me thinking. I don't get it -- what's with women and flowers? I mean, sure, they're pretty and they smell nice, but after a while, they die and need to be thrown away. They don't last. I'm not gonna stop giving them to my wife, but I'm still gonna wonder why she likes 'em SO MUCH. If somebody wanted to surprise me, get me a DVD or a computer game. They're just as expensive, and they last a LOT longer! 🙂

it harkens back to the day when there were no flower shops.
to give flowers then, you had to go out and find them and pick them.
you know it's the thought that counts thing.

I never understood it either. They are so damn expensive!! I would much rather buy her some electronics for the same money or a gift certificate.
I wonder how they would feel if I buy plastic flowers that cost the same as real flowers...

I think it's just the thought....Then again, Males will never understand how the Female mind works. They just don't think like we do

ever hear the word 'romance' ?

FINALLY SOMEONE GETS WOMEN!!!

YES!! BUT WHY DO WOMEN FIND FLOWERS ROMANTIC?!

😉

Growing up, most women are exposed to this notion of "romance" through popular media.
Flowers, chivalry, candlelit dinners all fit into this mold.
Hence, when a guy does something like that, he's "romantic" and therefore doing exactly what is expected of a proper mate.
This will often lead to expressive emotional outbursts and/or nookie by the female.

Simple conditioning, really.

It also take time to go to BB or Fry's to pick up something 😉

Oh, I realize this very much. I haven't slept on the couch yet! 🙂

I am an avid gardener and there are few things I love more than fresh flowers. You have no idea how excited I get when my gladioli bloom and I can cut them and arrange them for my home!

There is something about plants and flowers that are very like women themselves. I think it goes much deeper than simple social conditioning. To me, my plants are my babies and what they produce is a matter of great pride for me.

My husband, after 10 long years, has FINALLY started to understand what plants and flowers mean to me. He always had the attitude that because HE didn't get it, it wasn't important.

Lucky for him I don't have any oleander. 😉

Girls are irational by nature, so one can't apply reason in trying to understand why they like a colorful weed that you paid a lot of money for 🙂

I wonder if color blind chicks like flowers too.

Because words aren't enough. They only know you're telling the truth when you have to pay money... It's sort of like financial insurance to them....THOSE EVIL HARPIES!!!!!

Romance is one answer, but I don't think it's a complete one. I don't know if it's something that reason can or even should completely attempt to grasp. A game, a DVD, these are parts of the mechanical universe, utilitarian things. Where's the feeling? What is a flower? Do what you haven't done for years and years and years. Stop and feel. Remember green grass and blue skies filled with faces and animals and monsters. Remember the warm wind blowing over your body. Remember when the universe was an infinite unknown perfection. What is a flower in the light, silent in its glowing perfection. What is when only the flower is? Oh my beloved, wherever I look it appears to be Thou.

In the spring I like to gather almond and plum flowering branches, perhaps a camellia or two and make my version of ikebana. In the silence, eternity draws near.

This is what I think:

1. It shows that you care/that you thought of us: sure there are alot of things that can do that, and flowers are one of them. I might also have an emotional outburst if you pick out a sappy card, buy me something I mentioned once, or take me to look at stars. It's nice to know that someone is willing to think and do something because they care about you

2. Flowers are pretty. Girls like pretty things. They look nice on our desk/in our room

3. As an extention of 1, it shows that you are willing to do something sappy for us. Yeah, maybe I NEED a new iron, but honestly, I don't want it for my birthday. Love, inherently, is somewhat unreasonable, so it kind of follows that the things you do to express it are kind of unreasonable/illogical

I, personally, am not the kind of girl who needs flowers at every turn- honestly, if a guy gave them to me all the time, I might become annoyed because I would think his money could be better spent. I would LOVE if a guy bought me gadgets for occasions. REGARDLESS...every once in a while, its wonderful to get something so sappy and romantic like flowers.

whew, done. questions?

What Moonbeam said!

You should sit on my back patio when it is raining on my herb garden. Nothing quite like lavender, rosemary, thyme, mint, and basil releasing their fragrances into the misty air.
