What's the deal with Dual Layer Media?

Dual Layer media seems to be consistently priced way out of range to make it a practical backup media. I remember buying my DL burner almost a year ago and the price has yet to come down, they're at least 20 times more expensive than single layer. Is it just economies of scale holding this back, or is there something that makes DL basically harder and more expensive to make? You'd think the price would've come down a little bit now that pretty much every burner sold has DL capability.

HD DVD and BluRay are coming, which have way more capacity than DL DVD. DL DVD has no future, thus there's no reason for anyone to really try to make it better or cheaper.

HD DVD may be a long way off. If Sony and Toshiba come to an agreement, the whole HD-DVD/BR standard will have to be worked out again.

DL is expensive because it's new, and it harder to make. It's come down a lot from where it was.

stick with dvd-r, +r
screw dvd dl, double layer yes? but not double capacity and not double priced according to single layer dvdr
It's a ripoff, even a harddrive is cheaper then this and a awhole lot faster and reliable.
These media are made for the average movie junkie who couldn't careless if what they backed up to didn't work after a few days :D
dvd at 4.7gb is a pain in the ass, so is 8.5gb due to cost
25gb, or 50gb would make a lot more sense to me.
with 25gb I can turn 5 dvd into 1, would be a space saving!
100 into 20, I hate having to many dvd or even cd. They get clotted and make my room messy :)

So far the only motivation I may have for using DL is to do 1:1 backups of my DVD-9 films. At the moment I'm still more than happy with AutoGK. As for backing up data to DL, well, to me it's putting a tad too many eggs into one basket...

not exactly good backup on dvd media, its only for casual user
if you're serious use IDE to USB 2.0 adapter and convert your IDE to external hd
and buy a real big ones like 250gb
2 of that will store all the crap you ever need :D
It all narrow down to $$$, I hate to shuffle through 50 dvd or 100 dvd just to find what you want. You can't have too many dvd because they are difficult to manage and organize. I've got tired after a few hundreds or so just like on cdr
