What's the deal with brain freeze?

I never have an issue with brain freeze with cold drinks with ice.

But with a 'slushy', what happens is, 'I'll take a small sip, that'll be ok', for 20 seconds 'that wasn't a problem, good', then I feel it coming on.

Then there are one or two minutes of nasty pain, really not good. Nothing to do about it.

That's sipping carefully to only drink a small bit of the liquid without any ice.

So, if I have one, I'll wait until it melts, and then can drink it.

Something like this?

"Oh no, your head is almost frozen at the core! Death must be imminent! Emergency! Oh god! Moar blood now!"

Its the veins in your skull shrinking because of the cold.

Run your tongue along the roof of said cold mouth. It will warm things and reduce headache.

I actually tried that the last time, and I'd say it didn't seem to help much, maybe just a little.

Only reason I can think it happens only with slushees is if they're colder than drinks with ice.
