What's the deal when a CPU "vomits" its guts out?

I just saw some pictures of damaged cpu's from overclocking, and there were a few that showed what appeared to be the actual silicone of the chip shattering and spraying out of the sides of the chip...

The caption said that the cpu was overclocked and vomitted its guts out... does this really happen?

The pics were found on a link from hardocp...
 
I think I've seen the images you're referring to and I didn't believe them myself. The pics that i saw looked more like someone took a chisel and hammer to the core than anything.
