What's the deal about Teach for America?

I got a few rather persistent emails from this girl from Teach for America to schedule a meeting with the Recruitment Director. Apparently someone recommended me because of my "academic achievements" and for being a "top senior" in my school. The thing is, I'm anything but so I'm not sure what to make of this. 😕

Does anyone know what is all this about?

They recruit good students from good universities around the country from all different majors. If you apply and are accepted, you are placed as a teacher in a low-income urban or rural setting. They give you a crash course in teaching over the summer during a 6 week "institute" program. After that, you are ready to teach while you work towards your masters in education.

If you're interested in teaching, or not interested in jobs related to your major, it can be a rewarding and challenging program. My wife is currently in her second year with TFA here in NY. She teaches 9th grade math and she graduated with an IS degree.

Thanks MrChad. Forgot to mention that I did a little research on the website and gathered that they are a legit bunch. I'm still not sure if I want to do it though..

their program targets low achieving locations, so its very likely that you will be working a dangerous location...its worth it too if youre looking into education. definitely a great route for future teachers.

its a competitive program too...youll need a high GPA and other good stuff to qualify....including passing a few interviews...

My sister thought it was rewarding but had a rough time ( graduate from small new england college put in an inner city school. good thing she had a "panic button").

Not sure if I would recommend it based on talking to her. But if that's your cup of tea... go for it.

I have a friend who is doing it right now, I think it was in Philly. She now has a really bad drinking problem. It was good for the first few weeks then she slowly burned out I guess.

From what I gather, it's definately a rewarding experience and worth it, IF you can handle it.

Dangit, you guys had me all excited...till I went to the site and found out that they're not in a single city I would ever consider moving to, and only have future plans for one I might consider (Connecticut). Where's Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Maine, etc? Bastards. 8-( Sounded like a perfect program too. *sniff*

I have a friend in her first year in TFA in Philadelphia. She teaches ninth grade english. From her e-mails it sounds rough but I think it would be a great thing to do.
