Whats the current state of DoW II multiplayer?

Ive got the original DoW II, thought it was decent, GFWL pissed me off though and CoH is still better IMO so i stopped playing it. Ive just picked up the complete collection for £7, so i got a few questions about the current state of the game.

How does it work with the expansions? Is the community split between them or is it like CoH with one single community throughout all expansions?

I gather GFWL was ditched in the most recent expansion, do the other games like DoW II and chaos rising still use GFWL or was it ditched for them too?

Is there any point to installing DoW II and chaos rising (apart from single player) or does retribution come with everything they had and more? For example is it like the tales of valor expansion for CoH which comes with all factions unlocked for multiplayer.

Have the last expansion, can't find people to play last stand. Haven't tried normal MP.

I used to play DOW2 with a friend. We recently were trying to get into a multiplayer game, but couldn't find anybody. We thought it was just because everyone moved to the new expansion, so I am also wondering on if getting DOW Retribution is worth it or not. The multiplayer was awesome back when I used to play.

I have retribution, would have to check online to see how normal MP are but i can't find a last stand game.

Hmm well it looks like stock DoW II is completely dead, i saw a game but it was full then it disappeared from the list, matchmaker cant find anyone.

I don't understand the appeal of last stand. It puts me to sleep.

Yes. DOW2 Retribution has a lot of games in the "Custom Public" section of the online multiplayer. Not sure about the automatcher. DOW2 and CR had a lot of players in the automatcher and I played it for 2 years.

basically everybody moved to Retribution. They never released another patch for DoW2 vanilla or CR since Retribution came out (they're solely SP now). They also ditched GFWL which made patching Vanilla & CR a pain, Steam has no such issues for patching. The problem is since THQ hit serious financial issues, there has'nt been a patch released (nor will there be) for months.

Dow2 Retirbution regularly goes on sale for under $10, so just wait on a sale and buy it. Its very much worth it for the MP, Last Stand, and even SP.
