Next version of mobile broadband, faster, etc.
This should make it easier for you:

vanilla 3G hovers around 1.5mb/sec ish. EDGE/GPRS are around double digit kb's.

cool, thanks.

...so do any of these spectra actually improve on voice quality? I've yet to talk through any sort of cell device that has voice clarity that is nearly as good as ye 'ol analog land line.

"digital clarity" is such a scam.

Driod Thunderbolt? My dad has one, (i have iPhone 4) and its almost as fast as the 4. Def the closest thing in terms of speed and framerate of any Droid phone. The iPhone 5 will beat it, but since you are singling out apple for some kind of personal reason, youll have to step down to a decent droid

If that's the case, why does it still run slower than iOS?

Ok, most 1ghz devices (single core) run slower than the iPhone 4 because of bloatware.

I have a Nexus S. I think on stock it's decently fast, but when you slap a real ROM on it, it FLIES like the iPad 2. The iPhone 4 feels slow.

For the record I have a iPod Touch 4G. Yes it's neutered in that it has only 256mb of RAM, and while it smokes my Motorola Milestone @ 1.1ghz with 256mb of RAM also, my Nexus S with CM7 runs circles around my iPod Touch 4G. It also has no problem keeping up with the iPhone 4s my friends rock.

If you're talking about UI fluidity, yes Android needs improvement. For example my gf has a Incredible 2, and that thing feels like a sluggish piece of shit. Blame Sense or whatever. I'm gonna ask her if she wants me to install any custom ROMs for her or whatever...

As long as the bandwidth is there and it's allowed to be used for data and voice, it should help. Have you ever talked with anyone that has a digital home phone service? It should be pretty comparable given available bandwidth of the "4G" services is considerably higher and is nearing the average home-installation's bitrate.

LTE is rolling out on Rogers in Toronto sometime this month. I'm with Fido, which is budget branch of Rogers. The Samsung Galaxy S II is their only phone so far that supports it. I tried it out in Best Buy today. It sure is fast, screen on it is very nice. Google Maps loads faster than my iPad. So looks like it's really down to it or the iPhone 5.
