What's the convention when supplying dimensions?

When dimensions are provided in the form A x B x C, which number is which mesaurement? Is this universal?

I don't think it really matters, because either way, you can physically rotate the cube/box to what you need it to do.

I'm reffering to product dimensions, where exact dimensions make or break the deal.

At least that's what I would naturally assume. Otherwise I have no fvcking clue. :(

When I list them, I always label the numbers, but I often find refferences to dimensions for products without labels. And when dealing with squarish objects, it is unclear...

That would make sense, yes, but not everyone uses such logic.

Depending on the type of object, it would matter. A CRT TV or reciever has a front and a back that must be properly orented in a cabinet.
