If you're using it for home protection, I'd get a .22

Is that a joke?

Don't see why it would be, while a .22 may not be as powerful as a .12, it should be pleanty for home protection.

because you will have to be a superior marksman with a .22 to have a shot at stopping your invader, while with a shotgun, 12 ga, it wont over-penetrate and you have a much higher chance of getting a good hit.

Oops, I suppose I could have been a little more specific. I meant a lighter gauge shotgun. I don't know a ton about guns, but wouldn't a lower gauge shotgun also work well?

Please, just quit while you're ... well, not ahead ... but not so far behind? :p

Technically the guy saying you won't get knocked down by a shotgun is correct, just watch that episode of Myth Busters. However, the person getting shot will likely FALL down, but it will be due to pain and/or misalignment of body parts, not because of the impact from the round fired. ;)

Anyone see the Steve McQueen movie, The Hunter, where he plays a bail bondsman ?

What is that thing he uses to knowck down the big guy ? It doesn't shoot bullets or shells, but some kind of pillowy looking thing.

Of course, it's Hollywood so maybe there is no such device that works the way it does in the movie.

Don't go any smaller than a 20 ga for HD. If you try to use a .410 for HD, you'll probably need to be using slugs. If you're going to shoot a .410 with slugs you just as well get a pistol of some sort. It will be easier to manuver around your house.

Lots of misinformation here.

BAHAHAHAHA, knocked down by a .12 guage????

BAHAHAHAHA, you do know that NO normal, house defending gun has enough power to knock someone down... because if it did, it would knock the shooter down as well...

Wait, you mean that people don't go flying across rooms when shot with a 12 gauge? I always thought that Mafia was the epitome of realism in computer games.

Guns, ammo, ear protectors, cleaning stuff... Walmart's sporting goods department is pretty stocked. KMart doesn't have nearly as much gun stuff, and don't even bother going to Target for stuff like this.

Shotgun = less aiming, but more collateral damage. Ignore Collaterial damage for home protection, .22 isn't likely to scare anyone with enough balls to break in, and shotgun pellet holes fix easily in sheetrock.

OP: Consider a Mossberg 500.

That Remington 870 pictured is the perfect home defense weapon. Just rack it when you hear the burglar. If he is still hangs around, keep shooting until the weapon is empty, because your burglar is obviously a crazed psychopath... :p

Generally, they're lighter, plus you'd have 10 shots vs. 1 shot with a cheap shotgun.

That is NOT a good idea.

why would it matter how much he spent if he was dead anyway?

This is a bad mentallity to have if you live in an apartment or have loved ones in the house. Only use large enough shot to penetrate the bad guy's clothes and into his body but not go all the way through him into the next room. Collateral damage is never an option when innocent people are around.

Shotgun isn't going to penetrate walls, apartment dwellers and loved ones in any other room are safe. I don't recommend firing with loved ones in the line of fire (pets included), anyone else is certainly no innocent person. Fire away...the bastard that broke in doesn't care about innocent people, and dropping him in your hallway PROTECTS innocent people that happen to be around.

Your OP reminds me of "Failure to Launch" when the girl goes in to buy a cheap gun and one bullet and the guy tries to get her involved w/ a suicide watch.

00 buck and even #4 buck WILL penetrate walls.

Just be careful if you ever have to shoot an intruder.
