What's the cheapest insurance I can get? (college student)

I'm buying a car and I'm trying to find the cheapest insurer because I'm under 25 on my own plan! I have a clean record and I can't see myself getting anything other than full coverage. Other than coverage options, are there any ways to reduce my costs?

So far, Geico has given me the lowest quote. I also have a B average! 🙂

Sorry but you're fucked.

'round here, absolute minimum legal insurance for people younger than 25 is about $1800 per year. Comprehensive is another $2000 on top of that. I remember my first car had a bluebook value of maybe $1000 at most but the insurance company wanted an extra $2000 per year if I wanted the comprehensive insurance. Obviously that's a retarded idea, and that's why most young people 'round here only have liability insurance.

Ironically race is a protected class but gender is not. If they raise your insurance rates because you're black, you can sue for them being racist assholes. If they raise your insurance because you're a man, you can't sue. It makes no sense.

I know I'm in a rough spot, I'm just looking to make the best of the situation. Has anybody taken one of those "driving courses" to lower their rates?

Where do you live? I live in oklahoma, drive 30k+ miles a year, am 20 with one speeding ticket and full coverage on my fusion is only $1150 a year

Call around. Ever place has differant rates for differant companies.

We went from Geico to eSurance and saved a lot. But it could be eSu. would be more where you are at. Call them all and also look for a broker and call them to see what rate they can do.

This. Progressive gave me the best deal by far when I was looking, and I have stayed with them ever since. I probably should shop around again, but I'm very happy with them.

Sucks to be you. I pay $22/yr extra for comprehensive on the MR2, $38 for the Subaru, and $54 for the Tundra. 😀

We pay $2600 per year for 2 cars with state farm.

06 GC 4.7L
06 A4 2.0T 6 speed

full coverage for both ($250 deducts), 1 speeding ticket for me, 3 for the GF.

I am 24, she is 22

Is the car worth getting full coverage? Don't want to spend the value of the car over 3-4 years in insurance.

But yea just call around. Liability for me when I was 21-25 with a dui, speed contest and deemed high performance vehicle was $130/month.

Now on my gf's policy, for both of us full coverage on 04 Sierra, 01 Trans am and liability on 01 Camaro is under $2000/year.

Ummm, asking about the cheapest insurance on the internet is kind of like asking where you can get the cheapest gas. You can get a general idea but if you don't live in the state of the responder it's kind of a moot point.

Each state has different rates and rules as to what limits of liability you can carry. So really you should find a independent agent that can quote you with different companies or just do a bunch of quotes yourself online. Good Luck.

i think the best way for a young adults to lower their rates is to get a cheap to insure car.

Obviously its cheaper to insure something simple VS a mustang GT. Second best to shop around. Each company has a different way of grouping drivers, they rate accidents/cars differently. Classic point i saw was a subaru Impreza, it has a lot of trim models, WRX, WRX STI, RS, outback. some companies just group it as impreza and even if you drive a non turbo stock impreza your paying the same as the 300hp WRX STI rally car. Not exactly fair but smaller companies tend to do that.

I've never seen a reasonable explanation of this. I always bring up this point when conversations about car insurance arise.

^ i've always thought it was due to certain statistic.

More male drivers on the road vs woman drivers. If a male and female are in a car, generally the male would be driving. Males tend to like/want/drive sportier more higher powered cars. Yea i know women drive sporty cars to and certain ones always drive but general population is that the male would be driving. This is mainly based of all the conversations i've had with my co-worker and friends when the subject comes up. I always ask who normally drives and etc.

Race never had to do with it.

What if they were able to show statistics to prove that asian people had significantly lower crash rates than black people. Would they be allowed to start an insurance company that only insures asian people? Well no, you can't do that because it's racist. Sort of like giving higher insurance rates simply because someone is a man is sexist. Sexism = illegal..... unless it's against men in which case sexism is normal. It's sort of like when I had a dog in the 1930s and his name was the N word. It was ok because that was back before racism was bad.

I saw an ad on TV for a company called "grey power" which is supposed to insure old people. I was thinking of starting my own company called "white power" and it only insures white people. I think it's a great idea, but I'm always willing to listen to what other people think about this idea.

If you're buying a new car on a loan you're pretty much stuck getting full coverage until you pay it off.
This. So totally this. Don't dare buy a care unless you've done your homework and you know exactly what the insurance is going to be. That would suck if you got a used corvette on a $5k loan then found out you can't insure it because the insurance would be $10k per year until the loan is payed off, but you can't pay it off because you were going to use the corvette to drive to your job.

Go to an insurance broker if you can. have on i went to when i bought my new truck. I'd called and looked around and cheapest i could find was 1200 for 6 months for my new truck and my car. Went to the broker and she was able to find it for 900 for better coverage too. Was free as she got some commission from them...was GMAC i went through. My broker was able to get 20+ quotes right off the bat so definitely quicker than doing it all by myself!

Myself being asian, i think there is a strong stereotype that female asians are bad drivers.

Maybe the statistic that are used by insurance companies aren't allowed to record the race of the driver/drivers involved in accidents. I honestly dont know. But that is the MAIN reason why i tell myself a male cost more then a female. You can bring up many case and points, like WTF does the age of 25 mean... why do the rates drop at that point? Or why a 18 year old who knocked up a female and got married pays lower rates then me who is 24 in college with straight A's. Just because your married doesn't mean your a better driver.

Everyone needs a reason for why things happen.

My rates didn't take an unusual drop at 25 -- they had a continual decline as time went on (based either on age or my vehicles getting older..who knows) 😛

That's about what I'm looking to pay for my new bike come february.

As for the OP, I pay $600/yr for liability only for my '01 Civic. USAA. 23yo

😱

That's about 34 times what I pay...guess there's a plus to having an older/slower bike 😛
