What's the catch with Columbia House DVD?

<< You get 4 DVDs for 49¢ each plus $1.99 each shipping and handling
As a Club member, all you need to do is buy 4 more movies in the next 2 years at regular Club prices (currently as low as $19.95 plus shipping and handling). You may cancel anytime thereafter.

It seems great. 4 cheap movies and 4 at regular price. What am I missing??

Sounds fine, but I would take the option where you get a fifth dvd for like 50% off or something, and then you only have to buy 3 rather than 4 in the next 3 years. Their regular club prices are most likely higher than they say, but it is still a good deal.

Nothing. Look @ several posts about this on the DVDTalk.com forums. They have VERY VERY detailed instructions and promo codes to get you the best price per DVD possible. Some people have done this many many times over. I highly suggest that you read those posts, they are very informative. RossMAN would tell you the same thing 😉

No catch except their selection isn't great. Every month they send you a form and if you don't return it checking off the NO box, they will auto-send you their selectino of the month. It's best to get all the DVDs immediately then cancel.

<< currently as low as $19.95 plus shipping and handling >>

this could be the catch... where it says as low as $19.95 and shipping and handling

they probably have higher prices on most dvds... not all... some could be $19.95
and their shipping prices could be considerably higher than most places

You're not missing anything. They are counting on you buying more than the required minimum. They'll mail you a catalog every three weeks or so and you have to return a card to them if you DON'T want the "featured selection". A lot of people end up buying it because they don't bother to send in the card.

The catch is, the regular prices are like $30 for a DVD you could get anywhere for $19.95, and shipping on small orders is through the roof. It is possible to save money with Columbia house, but you have to buy at least 5 DVD's per order. That way you take advantage of the savings you get from the sales they have. Plus, shipping with them is actually better when you order more. And if you don't send the card, you get those damn DVD's. I can't tell you how many times I have had to write "return to sender" on a DVD and send it back.

If you "forget" to send in the card and they send you the DVD, do NOT open it. Write "Refused - return to sender" on it and put it in the mail. After two or three times, they stop sending you the DVD every month. 😀

This is a deal, just like everyone else said, read the DVDTalk forums for info. I picked up several Bond SE's when they still had them. Rumor is they still do have them, you just have to call with your order. The 19.95 DVDs aren't bad, they're just not great. There's some classics like "Batman" that are good picks.

Oh, and if you call and ask to become a "prefered member", you don't have to send the card in. I don't remember exactly how it works, but I believe they either give you a 800 number to call or you have to send the card in if you WANT the DVD (as opposed to not wanting it). But the best way to do it is to cancle after you buy your initial movies to fulfill the requirement. Then rejoin and get more movies 🙂

I remember back in the day, when you could get DVDs from Columbia House for an average of 6 and a half bucks!

alright so if im reading through all the info correctly, signup, wait to get your account processed, get your 4 really cheap DVD's, then get the rest of the ones you need to and then cancel after you get them??

Like someone said above, if you want to get the best deal, go to the dvdtalk.com forums and look for the instructions there.

I'd like to know WTF is up with that place. I haven't been able to get on their site for days. Just called their 1-800 number and it's busy. I'd like to cancel my "Directors Selection" before they send it!

You don't have to send cards in anymore. You get an account on the website and decline your selection right there. The day I get my new CH catalog in the mail I log in and decline my directors. Once you buy your 2 fulfillments (or more if you pick a crappy code) you can cancel.

the only catch is that, when you have to buy your DVD's, you won't want to put out $50 for two DVDs that you actually want. I bought 2 19.99 dvds that I really didnt want from them to satisfy my agreement, if I bought dvds that I wanted, then it would have cost about $55 or so. Good deal though.

The only catch is that you'll recieve their junk mail forever. I got in on an even better deal while ago where I only had to buy 1 more DVD. I think I ended up paying only $7 per DVD all costs considered. The regular prices on their DVDs are high, though.

You can refuse the director's selection on their website. But be warned, they WILL send you DVDs from time to time even if you tell them not to. Has happened 3 times already with me. I always write "refused" on it as put it back in the mailbox. I think I'll cancel soon, since I'm tired of having to remember to cancel the director's selection. But overall, it's a good deal to get in on and then cancel your membership.

I just go to their website, login to my account and click on "Director's Selection" right there then click on NO. That's it. It takes less than 2 min

There really is no catch, it averages out to roughly $10 each shipped but you have to be very careful in how you order ... otherwise you'll get screwed and end up paying more.

Read this thread and the DVDTalk.com threads referenced in there. I've done this deal several times and everything went as smooth as butta.
