Go down to your local hard ware store and get some painter's touch brand spray paint. It should be about 3$ for a can of it. good stuff 🙂

You can also try your local auto parts shop (NAPA, PepBoys etc). They specialize in paints for metal surfaces. Don't forget to sand your case and wipe with a damp cloth (I prefer alcohol wipes), and people often recommend using a coat of primer.

Are you painting your drive covers? If so, those are plastic. If your painting the metal covers that you have to pull out before installing a drive, obviously thats metal. Two different kinds of paint.
For metal - auto spray paint. I recommend duplicolor. Some like rustoleum.

For plastic - Plasti-kote.

For bare metal (no paint at all). Buy sandable primer and some wet/dry sandpaper from auto parts store. Spray the primer. Let it dry for a day. Then wet sand with 400 grit paper. Then spray another coat, let it dry for about an hour or so (read directions on can) and then sand with 600 or 800 grit. IF the coat looks nice and even after sanding, then move on. If its not perfectly even and "smooth" then put on another coat and use 1000 grit.
Then spray a nice even coat of spray paint. Let it dry for at least 24 hours. When going from primer to paint, you need to let the primer cure and allow out-gassing. Once dried, take 800 grit paper and wet sand some more. Spray another coat and wet sand with 1000. Spray, dry and wet sand with 1500 or 2000.
If your satisified its even and smooth. Get some rubbing compound. WAIT at least a month. Then use the rubbing compound to get a nice gloss on the metal. Then another month later, use "show glaze" polish (from auto parts store). In the end you should have a nice, high-gloss finish.

For plastic, the procedure is essentially the same, exect you have to use primer and paint that is specifically for plastic.

If your lazy, just go get some vinyl dye to paint plastic. The finish isnt high-gloss, but its durable and scratch resistant.

The only prob I have with the tutorial is the grits of paper. I had to use higher grits than him.

for plastic, the definite answer is vynil dye. check the hardforums for testimonials. Its like a perfect paintjob, comes in a sparay can... and it doenst look or feel like its been painted. It retains the texture of the original material.
