My neck got rather thick just from building the rest of my body. I've never done any direct neck workouts. Build your upper body and your neck will thicken up.

About twenty years ago I belonged to a gym that had an apparatus that exercised your neck. The had to get rid of it because members kept on injuring themselves on it. In my travels since to many different gyms I have yet to see anything that even remotely resembles that piece of equipment.

Shoulder exercises would definately thicken your neck.

I have a membership to 24 hour fitness. In the gym i go to normally they do not have that neck apparatus, however, at the other 24 they do. Its a weird seated where you bow your head forward then back up. Looks uncomfortable to me.

I'm inclined to agree. I'm no body builder, but when I started college I began weightlifting for the first time in my life. In a matter of months my neck was noticeably thicker than before, with no "neck-targeted" exercises.

A 4 way neck machine is probably the best way.
Something like this: Link

If you go this route be sure get some instruction/supervision and start very light.

The gym I go to used to have one but got rid of it for liability reasons. The big guys (which I am not) all compained when it was gone.

I managed to add a 1/2 inch to my neck size in the 6 months or so that I used it.

Shoulder and upper back lifting will help, but it is really not the same, and even the trainers admit that there is no other equipment that will substitute.

Wrestlers and ground fighters do some body weight stuff, like bridging, but it looks incredibly difficult, dangerous, and uncomfortable.

Good Luck,

Good Luck,

ahah there's a machine like that at the gym I go to
How do I use it? and at what weight should I start?
Do I go all four ways,, front, back, sides?

That machine is almost always occupied by old folks

It's an old school exercise but you can try "neck-ups" is what I think they are called...

What you do is lay on your back and with only the back of your head(on a towel) and your feet flat on the floor touching the ground(with knees bent) and make a pushup type move with your legs keeping your body rigid like a pushup. This will definitely work your neck. They made me do these in football training.

My neck gets quite a workout when I do front flys to work my pecs. At times it almost seems like my neck is holding me back rather than my pecs.

Yes, it goes all four ways, front, back, left, and right; you just have to adjust the direction you are seated.
(Perhaps this is why it is called a four way neck machine;)).

This is the one piece of equipment that you really want to have a trainer from the gym show you how to use. The adjustments and form are very important if you don't want to get hurt.

The trainer should also help you out with the proper weight, but I would still start very light until you are comforatable with the movement, and then work your way up slowly over the course of a week or two. I ended up doing two sets of 12 reps; I don't think this is the type of exercise that you want to ever go real heavy with.

You might want to bring a towel, it can be a little nasty doing the forward motion when you have to stick your face in the pad.

There are Ideal Proportion Charts if you are worried about this type of thing. Although, keep in mind that everyone is different, and these are designed for pure bodybuilders.
