I'm not sure what you mean by third button, but i use the right click, left click, scroll, & back & forward with no software on my MX510.

On the MX510 i can.
I would assume it's the same for the 518, 500, etc.

well, I went with the Intellimouse explorer anyways, the logitech just seemed too fancy with the extra buttons above and below the track wheel. it just looks like a disaster to happen when you're trying to frag your buddies :p

the intellimouse has a much simpler design, and I have good experience with it.

I'm sure the mx518 is a fine mouse, but I think, the intellimouse is more comfortable to me.
