dreamweaver is the best i've used... and i don't even think twice about others.

when i first started learning html like 10 years ago... i used hotdog. i'm completely and totally amazed to see that it's still around according to this thread. brought a smile to my face 😀

Oh man...I missed the 5 year anniversary of this thread! Still a relevant question though and a nice window into past opinions.

WHY WOULD ANYONE USE DREAMWEAVER 4.0 WHEN THERE IS DREAMWEAVER MX?

otoh, I was wondering why a thread about some webpage editor got so big 😀

lol, I just started using Dreamweaver after being vehemently against it for years, preferring the either simple code coloring text editors or a PHP IDE like PhpED. I have to say, I'm pretty much sold on Dreamweaver now. I've added a lot of my own custom features to it like improved tag insertion for PHP, opening other tools and manuals from the menu bar, enhancing its PHP tag library; with running Apache, PHP 5 and MySQL 5, I've turned it into a pretty good IDE. The only thing I was disappointed with is that it did not have more PHP feature support out of the box but I quickly learned that I could customize it into whatever I wanted, so I did.

And rofl at this thread; it's ancient history. 😀

I'd start with some online tutorials and notepad to get the basics before you start, but I echo what everyone else has said, dreamweaver and photoshop. I'm part of history too.

STILL Dreamweaver... practical GUI for beginner & expert... and the split mode is great for seeing your changes right away.

Alright my work just nominated me to make a website for us, so what is the best software to use. Keep in mind that I have NO experience whatsoever with web design so I would need something without a big learning curve.

This will help you slide down the html learning curve real fast:

HTML for the Conceptually Challenged

On that linked page, be sure to click the forward navigation arrow to the homepage builder & play around with that. By looking at the code it generates, you'll get a real fast html education.

As for the "best sw", besides Dreamweaver there's also Microsoft Visual Web Developer. THe Express version is free right now at the link.

A vote for Visual Studio Web Designer and now playing with Expression Web Designer beta. VS WD does better error correct then Dreamweaver MX in the default config.

Things change 😉

As of now I use an image editor for design and notepad for coding. It seems to be the most productive method for me after having tried the alternatives. A syntax coloring text editor can be helpful though.

If you MUST use a WYSIWYG editor, then Dreamweaver is the best I've tried. Just make sure to clean up the code manually afterwards.

I just downloaded the trial of Dreamweaver 8 the other day. I really like it.

I'm currently taking classes for web development and I'm just about to finish up with the HTML course.. Dreamweaver seems pretty nice in fact that you can still perform hand coded mark-ups , but if the "want to" arrises, you can utilize the design view.

.. oh yeah.. back from the dead.. almost a year later..
sorry.. I did a search on Dreamweaver and this is the only thread listed 😛
