what's the best way to share a USB printer?

I just bought a USB printer and I want to share it between two computers. The computers are within about 10 feet of each other and are on a wireless network. Is there a USB splitter I could use? Or maybe a wireless adapter? The computers are used at different times and print sharing on one isn't a good option.

Share it out as a networked printer and have 1 computer host it. In XP, from the hosting computer, right-click on the printer and select sharing...then follow the simple instructions. Then the other computers just need to navigate to the sharing computer(via explorer), then double-click on Printers & Faxes and right-click on the printer to install it's drivers and have it available to print to.

I have my wife's computer as the server and my laptop can print from anywhere in the house! Now, if they could only invent a printer that would make it into a paper airplaine and fly it to where I'm sitting, I'd be set 🙂

Yeah just use windows file and print share. That's what I do with mine and it works great. Just like a corporate network. Hit print, go downstairs and get the document. 😀

You can do file and print sharing, but the computer hosting the printer must be turn on so you can access the printer.

If the computer hosting the printer will always be turn on or its a server then no problem.

If you want to make sure the printer is always available then get yourself a print server hub wired or wireless. The printer would connect to the printer server and the printer server would connect to a router or wireless router.

I bought an IOGear USB/Wired Ethernet Print Server and it works great! I got it from CompUSA for $49 or something. Every computer on my local network can print to it. You just plug it into an ethernet switch, install drivers on each computer on the network, and blamo!
