Is there anything beside Western Union that is reliable, yet not expensive, to send money (electronically) to the Philippines?

The best, and unfortunately most practical way is Western Union.

If this is in regards to an internet purchase, forget about any deal you think is sweet... it's not worth the hassle. Look with your eyes, not your wallet.

If this is about getting a loved one some funds, then there shouldn't be much to worry about as far as scams.

It's the latter. I'd like to sen dsome money for a birthday gift. I guess I'll try Western Union...I took for granted that I could do it via PayPal but then I found out different.

Is xoom.com safe?

Wire transfer is safe and fast but expensive. If you send a wire transfer on Tuesday they'll have it within 24 hours.

Some credit unions offer FREE WIRE TRANSFERS, while other banks charge $20 - $45 per wire transfer.

Normally yes.

It costs $ to send/receive money and support that infrastructure.

Is this for an auction or something you're buying?

I wonder how much cash you can send in that. But sometimes if you are within a city that is heavily populated with filipinos they do have legit places that offer "door to door" service which includes sending package goods and money specifically to the Philippines.

Don't you have tranfer money agencies around <help if you live in a city with large Asian population>. I just sent some money to mom and the agency charge 2% fee and they will bring US dollars to my mom house within 24 hours. Not bad IMO.

How much WU will charge?

I just got a Phillipine newspaper, I will check and see if I see any ad for money transfer agencies.
