Just finished building my brother a computer and now I need to send it to him. what is the best way to send a computer completely assembled? UPS is obviously out. Is there something I must do to the computer before sending it? How should it be packed?

It will be traveling from Northern California to Southern California.
Cost is not a problem.

Thanks!

I ship alot of computers using Fedex. I always ship the monitors in there original boxes and packing. I ship the completed case in its original box and packing material it came with. Then I ship the mouse/Keyboard in a seperate box. Oh if you have a scanner/printer to ship use its orginal boxes.

I do agree UPS sucks for shipping.

The last FedEx shipment I got was a very expensive optical section for a newspaper page sized laser printer. It arrived looking like they tossed it out of the plane as they flew over. Either that or they had a big crash and pulled my package out of the wreckage. These days the USPS is a good option. The last several years they have really cleaned up their act and deserve another try.

dkozloski ..you have had bad luck with Fed Ex. I must be lucky then cross my fingers :)

I had to switch from using UPS because they where using my monitor boxes as a foot stool !!

All I have to ship is the computer. So you think just put it back in the case box? Fragile! This side up!

I only use Supermicro cases which are packed VERY well so I don't have a prob sending the completed computer using the orginal case box and the rest how I explained above..

if you are shipping to hawaii or alaska ship it USPS surface it is 50% cheeper. call the US post office and ask what they have for shipping methods for your distance. For example from Cal to hawaii surface takes 1-2 weeks from NY to hawaii it takes 5-6 weeks so the distance matters time wise but the cosy from Cal or from NY is the same on surface to Hawaii.

:) Lol I live in Hawaii Bwahahahaha.
Aloha!

FedEx is least chance of it getting screwed up. UPS absolutely sux the way product arrives. (UPS treats their emplyees like sh!t, so employees are p!ssed and don't give a sh!t; they take it out on packages).

Put it in original box, and put that in another box with non-rigid packing materials in between so they will absorb shock.

Just let your brother know that no matter how you send it, some things might still jiggle loose in transit. If he fires it up and it doesn't boot, or behaves strangely, that doesn't necessarily mean that something is broken. He may have to re-seat a card or something. If he's not up to it, maybe he has a techie friend who could help...
