What's the best way to give back to our troops?

As the title says, I'm looking for the best way to support/give back to our troops - particularly the ones stuck overseas as the holidays are coming up here.

I've heard of programs where you can pretty much DIRECTLY send stuff to different locations overseas, does anyone know more about that?

Any other suggestions?

My parents are doing something like this. They've "adopted" a soldier in Iraq and another in Afghanistan and have sent a bunch of stuff over there. I'll try to find out how they got involved.

You can't take this to the bank, but I think about them a lot.
If any are reading... Stay safe, Check your 6.

Wish we could send them fried turkey's. Guess we could ship frozen and fryers.. Wonder if they have propane?

Here's how my parent's got involved. I drive race cars so of course myself and my parents frequent a lot of sites about racing. On one site that has racing news they saw a press release about this program that this kid racing in Florida setup called "Adopt a Marine." So my mom called them and signed up that way. Since then he has added a form on his website to request more info about the program.

Obviously just follow the "Adopt a marine" link.

My parents have sent a bunch of stuff over, and just written letters. One of their Marines said one thing they like to get is golf clubs and golf balls believe it or not. I guess they go out int he desert and hit balls. LOL. Anyway, I had an old set of golf clubs I didn't use anymore so my parents sent those over also with a bunch of golf balls. I can't remember the other stuff they've sent.

Very cool, thanks - this looks like a great start.

I'd appreciate if everyone would keep the replies CONSTRUCTIVE. We all want them home, but in lieu of a miracle I'd like suggestions on how to actually support them.

hear! hear!

i knew this would bring some people out from under their rocks, but now for another actual constructive reply:

Xerox has been running this site for awhile.... it may not seem like much, but i'm sure any member of the military would enjoy reading a card from someone back in the states telling them, "thanks"

Thanks mosh. I'm definitely going to write some letters, I'm just looking for the best way to send them some cool shit directly.

http://www.anysoldier.com looks like a really good start to directly sending them stuff. I'd love to send over something cool like an Xbox 360, but I need to know if that is something that could be used and enjoyed by many. I'm really not trying to sound like a "oh, let's get them a cool toy" tool when they really need/want something else, I'm just trying to think of something that could really brighten spirits & effect as many people as possible. Help me figure out what that is!

how about getting touch with your local military base? they likely have programs set up where you can send the soldiers stuff and guidelines.

btw, i wish your generosity would spread like wildfire. :)

That is on my next step list I think - being located in NC, there is quite the military presence around here ;)

A local restaurant here called Taco Mac has a drop off for letters and I've sent a few that I wrote.

I'm not sure how to even go about sending anything beyond that though.

Maybe PM tallbill? IIRC he's stationed overseas.

You could also check with your local TV stations. Many times they have places you can drop things off and they take care of sending them to the troops. And many times the biggest wishes are for simple things that we take for granted like movies, playing cards, etc. Things to take their minds off why they're there when they have down time.
