What's the best way to erase a VHS tape?

Short of a $3,000 piece of equipment I haven't seen anything that'll erase a tape. Is there any cheap n' easy method anybody can recommend? Y'know, homemade electromagnet or something, or would that make the tape unusable?

As much as I know about digital media, analog media is a bit unclear to me.

You might try wipiong a large magnet across the take-up reel area.

Set the VCR Input to something that gives you a blue screen. Record away.

Or just use a large magnet.

Radio Shack used to sell electro-magnets for this. I don't know if they do anymore, but you can get them on Ebay:

There used to be VCR's that had a "flying erase head" that would erase the tape ahead of your recording to reduce noise.

You could probably find one cheap on eBay.
