What's the best way to drum up traffic for a new website?

My friend has started what I think will be a very user-friendly website. But of course, nobody knows about it yet. 🙁

He is thinking about giving away all sorts of hardware to get people to visit the site. Motherboards, old cpu's, etc. People always seem to want free stuff.

What would be the best way to promote a new website?

Put a bunch of commonly searched for terms and names on the page in the same color as the background. That's how the pr0n sites do it.

yeah, put the link in your signature or something, it'll get lots of traffice then.

Yep and word of mouth.

If he has a good website, people will tell other people.

IF is a big word in this case...

Put it under hot deals as a laptop for $5, legit deal, I got 20! LOL.

Or if you don't want to be killed, post it in OT, with a poll, it this user-friendly or not?

get it slashdotted.... somehow...

it takes a lot to impress slashdot 😛

tinyminds.org got slashdotted because of an interview with one of the linux kernel developers we did. There are better ways of getting your site noticed 🙂

Because if you're not prepared, you're site's going down...fast. And you host usually isn't too happy after its all over. (Mostly because when tinyminds got slashdotted, every site they hosted went down too 😉 It was kinda fun actually... )
