make sure you buy the 93% stuff, not the 70%

better yet, acetone
I was going to recommend 99% alcohol, but I wasn't sure how well it would really work. It would get rid of the grime, but you would almost have to dip the whole boards in a bath of it to actually get it off. Just using a brush or something wouldn't work very well... the dirt would just be displaced, not gone..

70% rubbing alcohol can be purified yo 99% Isopropyl with sodium chloride (table salt) and a seperatory funnel.
Yes.... That's how we first started talking, remember? :D

But I'd rather just go to Walgreens and buy it for 79 cents a bottle.;)

I picked up a can of compressed air with a keyboard brush combo at Staples today. Going to have some lunch and do an examination in a bit.

use an air compressor, not canned air

80psi takes off anything made in the last 40 years

although it doesnt always work on stuff from the 50's, that stuff gets caked.

Nice and dusty.. Not too bad though. Could be worse. Doesen't look like it will be too hard to clean up.

I love those finned transistor heatsinks.. they look cool. :D

New rectifier diodes

dude, that's ridiculous. your 80q looks factory-new :) I'm going to follow ribbon13's suggestion and rebuild it completely, although I don't have enough confidence in my soldering skills to put completely new wiring in...yet.

so far the junk is coming up pretty easily. I just need to make my own screw and part diagram.

It was a kit built unit, actually...

It's good that you're going to rebuild it, though... Good way to learn.

I was mainly looking for something that was plug and play, that I wouldn't have to mess with. Or I would have kept the one that I got a couple of months back.. It was in great shape on the outside, but..

It figures that my new one would suffer some minor cosmetic shipping damage(idiots), but I'll manage... It sounds awesome. :)

Toothbrush and dustoff always worked for me, I have a vintage Marantz 2220b receiver.

Radio Shack, among other electronics parts sellers, has some products that are made for heavy duty cleaning. Stuff I currently have from RS is called Precision Electronics Cleaner. No residue, safe for plastics, pcb, elec. contacts, etc.

It's mostly composed of heavy naptha, ether, and ether acetate. Works like a charm on heavy build-up. Has a spray can with a lift-up sprayer with a built-in brush. It's P/N 64-4345.
