I?m a newbie when it comes to burning DVDs. Just got my first DVD burner, an NEC ND-3540A and a stack of Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs, a few weeks ago. I?ve been to a few informative sites to try to increase my DVD burning knowledge, specifically making DVD movie backups, and found that there are various methods and software out there to accomplish this, but no good in-depth unbiased reviews on them. If you know of any please point me to them.

There are sites that claim they are software review sites, but appear to be only fronts for selling the software.

Correct me if I?m wrong, first you have to rip (decrypt) the movie, then if it fits on a DVD-5 disc (4.7 gb, actually 4.38 gb) you can burn it; if not you have the choice of either removing, shrinking (transcoding), or splitting data over 2 discs before burning.
There are the all in one solutions (rip, remove/split/shrink, burn) like DVD Cloner II. I tried the trial version of DVD Cloner II. It?s a little too basic for me, but it does give you the option of splitting a movie over 2 discs. Just eyeballing it, the quality of the backup movie I made was ok compared to the original.
There are the 2 step solutions like DVD X Copy Platinum, 1CopyDVDs2, Intervideo DVD Copy, CloneDVD2, DVD Duplicator, and 1ClickDVD Copy. You need a ripper/decrypter with these like AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, or DVD43. Some have to be used separately or can be integrated into the software. Software makers are afraid of being sued if they incorporate the decrypter directly into their software.

I?ve tried the trial versions of 1ClickDVD Copy and CloneDVD2 with AnyDVD. 1ClickDVD Copy is simple to use but has no option to split movies to 2 discs. It claims limited error correction for scratched DVDs. I like the CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD combo. Except for its splitting a movie over 2 discs function (maybe it?s just me), it?s easy to use and has good options. Again just eyeballing them, the backup movies looked good. I?m just backing up the movies only with Dolby 5.1 sound, so the lowest compression I had was 79%. I did notice that CPU utilization was very high during the transcoding. I?ve got an nforce4 MB, an overclocked Athlon64 3200 Venice, and 1 gb ram.

Depending on how you do it, this could be a 2 or 3 step process. A lot of people are using DVD Shrink to rip and shrink and then burning with Nero or some other software like CopytoDVD. The cheapest way is to use DVD Shrink to rip and shrink and DVD Decrypter to rip/burn or vice versa. Unfortunately updates to DVD Shrink are few and far between and DVD Decrypter may never again be updated. The next movie I backup I will try the DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter combo. I'm going to reserve my opinion until I try this, but so far I like the CloneDVD2/AnyDVD combo. Ok, they're not free, but they are updated frequently.
So what, in everyone else's opinion, is the best (speed, quality, ease of use, cost) way to backup a DVD movie?
