What's the best way to advertise a website?

I have finished a website I had been working on the past couple of weeks and I now want to get the word out there about it. It's a gaming website so I know the target demographic.

What would be the best way to go about advertising it? Anyone have any suggestions?

Keep generating great content, search engine optimize your site, the submit to search engines and directories, generate a lot of inbound and outbound links. Most important though, its the conent.

What do you mean by inbound and outbound links?

i'd go with what yobarman said. search-engine optimize your site. BTW, it is fast but kind of bland. get more content and maybe try google addwords?

Well I did actually do some stuff to SEO my site. I changed all of the URL's to be more explicative instead of with a buncha variable names in them.

instead of /index.php?system=wii&index=891 I now have /articles/wii/Wii-Box-Art-891.html as the URL. i also did this with my forum via a mod.

I do not know much about paying to use google adwords but I may take a look into it and see if it's worth it or not at this stage in my site.

It looks nice, but kind of cluttered. Maybe stick to 3 or 4 prominent sites for gaming news?

I actually changed it to be only 10 news items instead of 20 on the main page. I am thinking that maybe as time goes on, i will make it so users can add in their own gaming site RSS feeds, but for time being I don't have the time to code all that.

anyone else have any other suggestions?

i've signed up to www.linkreferral.com and am pretty high in rank there. I'm getting like 30 hits or so a day from there. I also have it in my sig in a few places. I have been trying to find some people to link exchange with and did for a few people so far. I also got onto digg's front page the other day, but since i'm on shared hosting, my site had to be taken offline like 10 minutes later cause it was slowing the box to a crawl heh.

if I can get enough advertisement $$ to pay for a dedicated server I'm going to do so and try to digg stuff often.

so any other suggestions?
