The first rule of Usenet is that you don't talk about Usenet.

The second rule is you don't pay for it.

I am intrigued by your ideas, and would like to subscribe to your respective newsletters.

You have to pay for it to get good retention and have adequate bandwidth to download lots of stuff per month. If someone knows differently, please PM me now.

The third rule is no newsletters.

In all seriousness I hear really good things about esynews. I used it for a month, then canceled. Not because of there service, but because I just didn't use it enough.

Service, retention, and speed are all really good with easynews IMHO.

I use easynews, 10 for 10, plus those little bonuses for running that grid and doing those silly surveys. You get 1 gig for 15 days worth of that grid stuff(DC?) I have it running on 3 PCs full time, so I get 6 extra gigs a month for that and 2 gigs for doing the surveys, one a week, 1/2gig a piece. 18 gig for $10 isn't too bad. But downloading dvd length files eats it up in a hurry. If you download the files striaght from the nntp server you get an extra 25%, so that'd put total file usage to ~22 gigs. But lately I have seen that their nntp service slipping, but the web based service seems to have good retention.
Wouldn't mind doing the giganews unlimited package, but I've heard they start capping your speed severely if you download too much. They say they don't, but if you complain about your speed, they'll just terminate your account, no questions asked.

All of the paid services will be between $10-$20/month. Try one out, don't like it, move to the next one. Just make sure you're not joining a server than is just a reseller of Giganews and other larger Usenet providers. You will generally get around 2 weeks or greater retention and hopefully at least 95% completion.

what's wrong w/ a reseller? or are you implying it better to just go straight w/ giganews if you do that?

I use usenetserver.com ... I usually download upwards of 100GB per month. They limmit me to 5 continuous streams, and there is no monthly download limit. They have pretty good retention overall, however, it's not perfect.

I just can't see myself paying extra for a usenet account on a server where i don't get unlimmited downloads.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply not to go with resellers, but yeah, go with the main company.

woah...you can get free usenet access that doesnt suck?...
someone PM me how

I think a few atoter's isp resell giganews servers or something....lucky bastages...

When signing up for DSL there was no mention of news service in their ads and the csr said it was not offered, yet after installation I was able to connect to Easynews via news.myisp.net with unlimited downloads and most of the binary groups available.

I later looked through the FAQ on their website and found the setup instructions listed.

If you haven't checked yours, it may be worthwhile to do so now.
