Depends on what "free" service you are talking about. Many ISPs bundle newsgroups and they can sometimes be partnered with some of the bigger companies. Some ISPs do this while blocking certainly groups (binaries, etc.).

But, if you don't have one with your internet service and are looking for just random free newsgroup providers around the web, you're going to be SOL unless you are truely just looking for news and development groups. If you're looking for porn, apps, games, movies, music, etc...you'll need to pay if your ISP doesn't already have it.

So would a pay for one have more?

What server are you using? On Usenetserver, only about 800k headers with files dating as far back as June 25. And as a comparison, how many headers are on a.b.boneless? Currently over 10 million headers on his group.

you aren't gonna find free servers that carry binaries except the ones from your ISP, but of course those are already paid for and generally suck. the bandwidth & storage requirement on these servers is crazy.
