BFG has an article on Appoppin's website that shows that most games runs well enough on a Dual Core processor, considering that he's not going to a multi GPU solution and has a heavily overclocked CPU, a nice GTX 470 or HD 5870 will do the upgrade, but I think that he should wait more, the GTX 480 isn't twice faster than the GTX 285.
for most games yes but like other sites he is disabling cores on an i5/i7 and coming to that conclusion. it was already shown that BC 2 on one review site did not drop hardly any when disabling two cores on the i7 yet in another review there is a large difference between real dual core cpus and quads in BC 2. if I disabled one core of my E8500 and a game ran fine could I make the determination that a any single core cpu could run the game adequately? of course not.

anyway, yeah the gtx285 is still a pretty strong card so its hard to justify the cost of an upgrade to the gtx480 especilly when he wont get 100% of it in every game.

I would say sell the 285 and grab a 5870/470/480 if you must upgrade now. If you don't mind waiting around 3 months, higher end HD6000 series should launch. After I would look towards socket 2011 or 1155. I am not sure I would upgrade to a Core i7 1156/1366 platform at this point. The GPU is going to provider a biggest boost for you at this time. Of course a Core i7 will improve gaming, esp. minimums, but not as much as going from a 285 to a 5870/480.
