Don't say Defense Grid. It was the first tower game I ever played and I loved it..200 hours of game play later, I'm looking for a new one.

I'm not sure what to think of those, they look like flash games. I'll give one a shot later but do you know the name of the game that is in space? I saw a review for it on tv a few weeks ago and I can't think of it's name.

Honestly, most of them are web based today. The ones for Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 suck ass by comparison.

Try Bloons TD4. Sign up for a Mochi games account (free) and get one upgrade automatically.

How do you think they stack up to Defense Grid? I thought that was a great game, I can play some of those maps in fast forward I got so good at it.

They were many great ones for wc3.

I had preferred the ones that let you send monsters against your opponents to get income and make them loose lives.

Many of the decent ones there are where it's at and beat the clone flash ones easy but they also have crappy ones also.

I would play through the Bloons games in order.

Very cool, very addicting, very free.

Bloons 4 is great, but not as good as DG, imo.

Sol Survivor is supposedly pretty good too, but I haven't played it.

Sol Survivor is very good, also quite different and puts up an interesting challenge. Available on steam.

Plants Vs. Zombies... Not exactly the same as a traditional TD but it's still one of the best out there.

We are now best friends.

Here's a gigantor list for you:
http://www.kongregate.com/tower-defense-games

The cursed treasure, gemcraft, and bubble tanks tower defense are the best!

^this. They are not as good looking as Defense Grid but pretty fun games.

The cursed treasure - the original and the level pack are the same game the only difference are the maps

Gemcraft - Sank a lot of time with this game. Chapter 1/Chapter 0/Lost chapters i have finished. The latest one however, labyrith, put me off slightly with the choice of skills that can only be used when you buy the premium content

Legion TD (warcraft 3) is a great tower defence. I loved that TD but different strokes.

Yes, they are flash games, but don't denounce them just for being flash games. Most of them are web-based flash games and then Defense Grid decided to make a full 3D version one as of late.

4 is the best and has all the features of 1-3.

I actually enjoyed 3 more, 4 is good though.

I don't think there's any reason not to start with 1. It's fun to see the evolution of the series imo.

Some of the best challenges are in the earlier ones.

If you want to try something different, get Anomaly Warzone Earth.

I like it, too; but best when it can be bought for ~$5. not very long, not much replay.

which reminds me...I need to get around to finishing it.

I almost forgot -

If you want a fun, engrossing, and unique take on TD try Creeper World. It's great to see it on a major download site (D2D).

It has a comprehensive demo.

My gf loves TD, and she's played through Creeper World like 4 times.

Most of the TD's mentioned here are great. Revenge of the Titans was fun, Plants v. Zombies was engrossing on a whole other level. I wouldn't even be able to count the hours I put into WC3 TD's, they were excellent, although it may be a little late to jump on that wagon now. Defense Grid was really great too. And you can't beat Bloons, since it's free haha. All solid choices.

If you like building defense and being attacked , stronghold might be the game for you. Start with stronghold:crusader and work your way up. The new one stronghold 3 is coming I think next month.
http://www.stronghold3.com/

If you preorder on steam you get:
7sixty and Firefly Studios today announced anyone who pre-orders upcoming castle building sim Stronghold 3™ from Steam will receive the original award-winning Stronghold for free. That's right, you can get the incredibly addictive game that started it all for nothing... zip... na-da... gratis! What's more - as if that wasn't already good enough - anyone who pre-orders from Steam get the exclusive Tower of London stage, which is playable in Stronghold 3.

Revenge of the Titans is awesome.

The problem is it uses a tech tree and the levels aren't self-contained. If you research the wrong things, the game becomes much harder or impossible. And if you spend a lot of money on one level, you will have less available for the next one, which could also make it much harder or impossible. There are tech tree upgrades that give you extra money, but those are one-time shots and you only get one upgrade per level, so taking one could prevent you from getting a necessary upgrade in time. And apparently you're supposed to save the money increases for the later, harder levels. The tech tree has tons of prerequisite techs that do nothing but allow you to research more prerequisite techs.

That's not to say it's a bad game, it's just quite difficult to get into. I gave up after playing for about an hour after I got it. The tech tree system makes me feel like I'd need to read a game guide to succeed, which shouldn't be necessary.
