Whats the best third party cooler for the 6800gt?

one thats not too expensive, preferably. for some damn reason im getting artifacts now...dunno why...maybe because its summer or maybe because its dusty, but under the same circumstances its never happened before.

thanks

I had artifacts with a 6600GT one time. I thought it was the card going bad so I pulled it out to package it for RMA. Looked at the cooler and it had thin blanket of dust built up on the fins. Cleaned it off good, popped it back in and all is well.

I would suggest taking it out and taking some compressed air to it before forking over $15-$30 for a cooler.

^ but if you must NV5, bar none. Although dont buy the revision 2 from svc, i bought it there cuz it was cheaper than the rev 3. However since the rev.2's have been out of production in soo long, the cooler had been sitting there for a while. I dont know exactly went wrong, my installation was flawless, everything read and done right, but somehow some of the heat pads didnt touch the ram and POOF. The card burnt out, plus the thermal paste was very dry from sitting there soo long so it didnt really help cool the core. But wtv you live you learn, and i love my 7800gs.

Yep, I had the same thing with my 6800GT. However I had a THICK blanket of dust on mine. It was most likely the reason my card was running at ~72ºC idle! But I got an Accelero X1 cooler for my 6800GT and it now runs 51ºC idle and is VERY quiet. I love this thing! But yeah, clean your card first. That would be the cheapest solution before moving onto another cooler.

FreedomGUNDAM: You sure you're talking about the Accelero X1? Personally, I use a NV Silencer 5 Rev 3 on my 6800GS (almost same layout as 6800GT...but exact same layout as the 7800GT) and it's been flawless from the day I got it.

The Accelero X1, works for 6800series cards, it actually cools better than the NV5 due to the heatpipe structure, even though it is dumping heat back into your case, instead of exhausting it out like the NV5's. The Accelero's run a bit quieter as well, but the NV5 is very quiet already, Reason i recommended the NV5 is because price, X1's are usually pricier and i dont really think its worth it. Especially for a 6800gt that youre just trying to cool better.

Would you recommend it if the X1 was pretty much the same price? 😉

Makoto Cole said pretty much the same thing concerning heat when complaining to MaxPC in this month's issue for their 10 verdict on the Accelero back in the May edition.

According to the chief engineer at Arctic Cooling, "[The exhaust] reduces the air temperature in the computer case by about 1C...[The disadvantage is that] a lot more pressure is used, therefore the fan generates a far higher noise level at the same performance. For a modern, quiet, high-performance PC, an [exhaust] doesn't make sense. The 1C plus in ambient temperature doesn't matter"

I actually considered the Accelero when I first saw the review in May, and I'm considering it even more now...
