What's the best thing to do with a car you don't want?

Did more research re: selling the truck.

In California, as the seller, one cannot legally avoid responsibility for the vehicle passing smog.

The seller can sign any agreement he likes with the buyer, but if the buyer takes the seller to court to recover the costs of smogging the car, they will win.

Only options: To sell it out of state, or to someone leaving the state.

(a replacement title is available via forms at the dmv)

Meh...failed emissions testing, huh? the truck is still good if it runs somewhat smooth, unless its had major body work (or needs it). If it werent for forums like these, I wouldnt even know that some states did emissions testing. We never have where I'm from. There are plenty of people who would be willing to take it off your hands for you. A good truck such as that shouldn't go to a scrap heap. All it may need is a tuneup, oil change, carbeurator adjustment, catalytic converter? Maybe one of those. It shouldn't run you too much.

Oh yeah....pics? I'm curious to see what we are dealing with here.

lol.. I wouldn't let that keep me from selling the car.

Chances are if someone is looking for a car in that price range, they aren't going to be interested in taking you to court to recover the costs of having it DEQ'd.. lol

No smog test in TJ......

I sold my old non-california vehicle at a gas station near the border.
No title. No plates
$500 cash

Think about it.......

Heh. 🙂 Only concern... if title isn't transferred and someone screws something up with your car, you're ultimately responsible. 🙁

Junk yards probably won't pay much, around here sometimes they want you to pay them.

They only make you pay if it doesn't have an engine, at least in my experience. Hell, my friend pulled the head and tranny out of his crashed volvo and....wait, I think he had to pay $60 for them to haul it away since he pulled out a lot of other stuff as well.

Anyway, call up ecology/pick-a-part/local salvage yard. Someone will pay you for it.

And are you sure you can't sell a car as "non-operationa"?

Another vote here for sell it out of state. Many states have no smog laws (there's none here). There are plenty of people that could get some real use out of that, myself included. Hell, if I wasn't a couple thousand miles away (in MI), I'd take it off your hands - I'm moving in less than a month, and the Trans Am isn't very good for hauling furniture 🙁. I'd love to have a beater truck for the winter and to use to haul stuff.

As it stands, I'm going to have to either rent a U-Haul or borrow my mom's van. Either way it sucks because I'm going to have to drive the vehicle back here when I'm done with it.

C4 + Cliff + Video Cam = teh funny

Oh, you may want to include a + permit - police modifier.

If it's your car you can get another title for it, obviously.

I would sell it to somebody in a state that doesn't require emissions. Alabama is such an example.
